Dell PowerEdge Servers: How to Identify What You Have
GTR Supply buys and sells used Dell PowerEdge servers by the lot, from a handful of nodes through to a whole room, and this page exists to help you work out what you are holding before you write a list. PowerEdge is the easiest server line in this trade to identify exactly, for two reasons most sellers never get told. The model number is genuinely decodable: the letter gives the form factor, the middle digit gives the generation, and the final digit says whether the machine is Intel or AMD. And every machine carries a seven character service tag that resolves to the configuration it left the factory with. Every model number on this page is identification help for the reader, not a stock listing, and nothing here says we hold a particular machine. Where the identifying number physically sits, how to read each field in it, and what it tells a buyer. Useful whether or not you ever trade anything with us.
Reading a PowerEdge model number
The letter is the form factor. R is rack, T is tower, C is a dense multi node sled, M is a blade for the M1000e enclosure, MX is a modular sled for the MX7000, FC is a sled for an FX2 chassis, and XR is the shortened depth edge line.
The digits are where the useful information sits. A three digit number is an Intel machine and reads as series, generation, then a zero for Intel. R730 is a series 7 machine, thirteenth generation, Intel. R640 is series 6, fourteenth generation, Intel. The series digit rises with capability and roughly with size: the four and six hundreds are the 1U machines, the five and seven hundreds are 2U, and the eight and nine hundreds are the four socket machines.
A four digit number is an AMD machine and adds a socket count. R7525 reads as series 7, fifteenth generation, two sockets, AMD. R6515 is series 6, fifteenth generation, one socket, AMD.
Suffixes matter more than they look. An xd carries considerably more drive bays than the plain model, xs is a lower cost variant of the same generation, and xa is built for accelerators.
Generations, and why they matter more than the model name
Dell counts generations rather than years, and the generation is the middle digit of the model number. The four you will meet most often in circulation are 13G from 2014, 14G from 2017, 15G from 2021 and 16G from 2023, with 12G from 2012 still turning up in older rooms.
Each step changes the processor socket, the memory generation and usually the drive backplane, which is why the generation decides far more than the family name does. 12G ran Xeon E5 v1 and v2 on DDR3. 13G ran Xeon E5 v3 and v4 on DDR4. 14G moved to first and second generation Xeon Scalable, 15G to third generation Scalable or EPYC on SP3, and 16G to fourth and fifth generation Xeon on DDR5 or EPYC on SP5.
The practical consequence for a seller is that nothing crosses a generation boundary. Processors, memory, risers, rails and in most cases caddies from an R730 do not move into an R740, so a mixed fleet is several separate lots rather than one.
The service tag, and why sending it turns a guess into a quote
Every PowerEdge carries a seven character alphanumeric service tag. On a rack machine it is printed on a small pull out information tag at the front of the chassis, usually towards the left below the control panel, and repeated on a sticker on the top cover. On a tower it is normally on a label at the back or on the top panel. The express service code printed beside it is the same tag expressed as a long number, which exists only so it can be read out over a phone.
The tag matters because it is not just a serial number. It resolves against Dell's own records to the configuration the machine shipped as: processors, installed memory, drives, storage controller and management options. One photograph of that tag replaces most of a written list.
One honest caveat. The tag reports what left the factory, not what is in the box today, and machines get upgraded and stripped. Treat it as the starting point rather than the final answer, and say on your list where you know the build has changed.
Caddies, backplanes and the iDRAC tier
Three things move a PowerEdge lot that a model number never shows.
Caddies. Every populated bay needs a drive carrier and every empty bay needs a blank, and carrier design differs between 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch bays, between generations, and again between SAS or SATA carriers and NVMe carriers. A node arriving with bare bays needs a tray bought for each one, and trays for a discontinued generation are frequently harder to buy than the drives that go in them.
Backplanes. One model name covers several very different machines. The same generation of 2U server shipped in eight bay, sixteen bay and twenty four bay 2.5 inch versions, in twelve bay 3.5 inch versions, and in versions wired for NVMe on some or all bays. The backplane is the board behind the drive cage and it carries its own part number.
The management tier. iDRAC comes as Basic, Express and Enterprise, with a Datacenter tier on iDRAC9. Enterprise is the one that unlocks the graphical remote console and virtual media, which is what most buyers actually want, and a machine reporting Basic is a different proposition.
What is in circulation
The families you will meet.
Placing your hardware in the right family does most of the work of describing it. Each note below says what separates that family from the one above it.
R series rack servers
The volume line and the bulk of what moves in this trade. 1U and 2U two socket machines dominate, with four socket models in the eight and nine hundreds.
T series towers
Pedestal machines for offices and branch sites. Same generations and the same service tag, but rack rails do not apply and the chassis is far heavier to ship.
C series dense sleds
Multiple compute nodes in one shared chassis, typically four sleds in 2U. A sled without its chassis is a different item from a populated chassis, so say which you have.
M series blades and the M1000e
Half height and full height blades in a 10U enclosure with its own switch modules and power. Blades and enclosures are traded together and separately.
MX modular
The successor to the blade line. Compute sleds in an MX7000 chassis with its own fabric modules, storage sleds and management. Chassis and sleds are matched to each other.
FX2 converged
A 2U chassis taking compute and storage sleds, aimed at converged deployments. Less common than the rack line, and the sleds are chassis specific.
XR edge and ruggedised
Shortened depth machines built for cabinets, cell sites and industrial environments. Physically different from the rack line even where the internals are shared.
PowerVault storage
The array and shelf line that sits alongside PowerEdge in most rooms. Not a server, but it is usually in the same decommission, so list it on the same sheet.

What it is worth
What decides the number.
Condition is only part of it. These are the things that genuinely move a valuation in this line, and most of them are still in your hands when you write the list.
- Generation, which sets the processor and memory platform and therefore whether the machine can still be redeployed
- A run of identical nodes from one cluster, which is common with PowerEdge because organisations buy them in batches
- The service tag being readable, so the original build can be confirmed without opening the lid
- Drive carriers and blanking carriers fitted, one per bay, rather than bare cages
- The correct rail kit for that generation, which is regularly harder to buy than the server
- The management tier the machine reports, because the remote console is what most buyers are actually buying
- The backplane variant, since a high bay count or NVMe capable cage is a materially different machine
- Processors, memory and drives still installed rather than pulled out and sold ahead of the chassis
- Bezel, control panel and both power supplies present rather than one seated and one bay empty

Where you are extending a fleet that already exists, send the specification of a machine you are running now and it will be matched rather than approximated, because a cluster whose nodes differ in stepping or firmware is a cluster that behaves unevenly. Bare and stripped chassis are supplied as well for rebuild programmes. Availability changes constantly and nothing on this page is a stock list, so the useful message is a model, a generation, a configuration and a quantity. If you are clearing
On the buying side GTR Supply buys used PowerEdge by the lot: complete configured nodes, machines already stripped of processors, memory or drives, completely bare chassis, blades with or without their enclosure, and whole racks bought intact. You do not need to test, sort or grade anything first. Leave the rails, bezels and drive carriers fitted, because they add to what the lot is worth and pulling them out on the way to the pallet is the one piece of preparation that reliably costs a seller money. The fastest possible list is a photograph of the service tag on one machine plus a count of how many identical ones there are. Where the fleet is mixed, group it by configuration rather than typing forty separate rows. Drives are securely wiped and a certificate of destruction is available on request.

Where is the service tag on a Dell PowerEdge server?
On a rack mounted PowerEdge, look at the front of the chassis for a small plastic tab that pulls out, usually towards the left hand side below or beside the control panel. The seven character service tag is printed on it, along with the longer express service code, which is the same tag expressed as a number so it can be read out loud. It is normally repeated on a sticker on the top cover. On a tower machine it is generally on a label at the back or on the top panel.
If the machines are still powered and reachable, you do not need to touch them at all. The iDRAC management interface and the BIOS system information screen both report the service tag, along with the model, the processors and the installed memory.
One photograph of that tag is enough for GTR Supply to work from. It identifies the exact build the machine shipped as, which is considerably more than a model name gives us.
How do I tell what generation my PowerEdge server is?
Read the middle digit of the model number. On a three digit Intel model it is the second digit: an R730 is thirteenth generation, an R740 is fourteenth, an R750 is fifteenth and an R760 is sixteenth. On a four digit AMD model the generation is still the second digit, so an R7525 is fifteenth generation and an R7625 is sixteenth.
The reason it matters more than the family name is that nothing crosses a generation boundary. Each step changed the processor socket and usually the memory generation, so the processors, memory and risers in a 13G machine will not go into a 14G one, and in most cases the drive carriers will not either.
For a valuation that means a mixed fleet is several lots rather than one, and it is worth grouping your list by generation before anything else. If you are not sure, send the service tag or a photograph of the front of the machine and GTR Supply will identify it for you.
What decides what a used Dell PowerEdge is worth?
Generation first, because it sets whether the machine can still be redeployed or is only useful for parts and rebuilds. After that, the configuration inside it does most of the remaining work: processor model and count, total memory, how many bays are populated and with what, and which storage controller is fitted.
Then completeness, which sellers consistently underrate. Drive carriers and blanks, one per bay. The correct rail kit for that generation. Both power supplies rather than one. The bezel and the front control panel. Each of those has to be bought separately by whoever ends up with the machine, and rails for a discontinued generation are often harder to find than the server.
Quantity and consistency matter as well. A run of identical nodes out of one cluster is a straightforward thing to place, and the same count assembled from odd models is not.
