How a Used Hardware Valuation Works
A used hardware valuation is a number built against a described lot, not a figure looked up in a table. Four things set it: exactly what the item is, what condition and how complete it is, how many there are and how alike they are, and how readily that item moves at the time you ask. Nothing else has anything like the same weight, and no two of those can be inferred from a model name. That is why there is no price list on this site or on any honest one. Two servers wearing the same badge can differ several times over in value on processor and memory configuration alone, and a published figure against a category name would mislead almost everyone who read it. What you get instead is a number against your list, normally back the same business day, and this guide explains how that number is put together and what changes it.
Why there is no price list
Because a price list would be wrong for most of the lots it was read against, and a wrong number wastes more of your time than no number does.
The specification carries most of the value in every category. Two processors from the same family and socket can differ several times over on core count alone. Two drives that both read the same capacity on the sticker can sit in different endurance classes and be very different items. Two servers with identical model badges can hold completely different processor and memory configurations. A figure attached to a category name cannot carry any of that.
Condition and completeness move it again, and neither is visible from a model number. Quantity moves it a third time, because a requirement large enough to take a whole lot is a different proposition from a handful of units out of it.
So the number is built against your list rather than looked up. Send the list and it normally comes back the same business day, which is faster than most price lists would have been useful anyway.
The four things that set the number
First, exactly what the item is. The part number does more work than any other field, because it settles generation, specification, interface and variant in a single string. A description does not, and a valuation built on a description has to be hedged.
Second, condition and completeness. Whether the equipment is working, untested or end of life, and what is present: rails, caddies, bezels, fan modules, power supplies, brackets, sealed packaging. A node stripped of its processors and memory is a chassis and is valued as one.
Third, quantity and consistency. Volume changes which lots can cover a requirement, and a run of identical units is easier to place than the same count assembled from odd models. This is why a small trial quantity often prices worse than the real order behind it.
Fourth, how readily the item moves. Some categories are steady and some arrive in bursts out of large refreshes, so what is easy to place changes with what has recently come out of the market.
Why the same model gets two different numbers
It happens constantly and it is almost never arbitrary. Four explanations cover nearly all of it.
The configurations are not the same. Same chassis, different processors, different memory, different drive population. The badge on the front is the least informative thing about a server.
The completeness is not the same. One lot arrives with rails, caddies and bezels fitted. The other has been stripped, and the missing parts have to be bought before anything can be racked.
The quantity is not the same. Ten identical nodes and one orphan node of the same model are different propositions, and so are a hundred units against a handful out of the same lot.
Or the description was not the same. A list that says approximately, or leaves the processor unstated, forces a number that covers the worst case, because the alternative is quoting high and revising down later. That last one is the only one of the four you control completely, and it is why a specific list is worth the half hour it takes.
Indicative versus firm
The distinction matters and it is worth asking about explicitly, because the two words are used loosely across this trade.
An indicative number is built from your description. It is honest, it is normally close, and it is conditional on the equipment being what the list said it was. It is what you get first, and it is enough to decide whether to proceed.

The gap between the two is entirely within your control. A list that is accurate produces no gap at all. A list with a guessed configuration or an unstated exclusion produces one, and the correction always runs in the same direction.
So mark unknowns as unknown rather than estimating them. An honest gap is easy to price around. A wrong specification found at verification is what forces a number to be revised.
What moves a number after the list is sent
Very few things, and they are all the same thing wearing different clothes: the equipment is not what the list described.
A configuration that turns out to be lighter than stated. Processors or memory removed between the list being written and the pallet being built. Drive bays described as populated arriving empty. Rails, caddies or power supplies missing from machines that were listed as complete. Damage not mentioned: bent rack ears, missing lids, missing fan modules. A count that does not match.
None of those are gotchas and none of them need to happen. They are avoided by describing the lot as it actually is, including the parts that make it less attractive, and by telling the buyer if anything changes between the valuation and the collection. Equipment gets picked over inside organisations after a list is written, and a quick message beats a surprise.
The reverse also happens. A lot that turns out to be more complete or more consistent than described is a good conversation rather than an awkward one.
Depreciation is a clock, not a cliff
IT hardware loses value as generations move, whether it is running in a rack or sitting unopened on a shelf. That is the one durable fact about used hardware value and it applies to everything.
It is worth understanding because it is often misread in both directions. It does not mean equipment becomes worthless at a particular age: plenty of older hardware holds real value because it is still deployed widely, still supported and still needed for spares. And it does not mean a valuation comes with a deadline attached. A number is built against a lot at the time it is asked for, and it is not a countdown.
What it does mean is that the cost of leaving equipment in a store cupboard is not the storage. It is that the hardware is quietly moving down its own curve while nobody is looking at it, and that applies just as much to new sealed stock from a cancelled project as it does to a decommissioned rack.
The useful response is to ask, not to hurry.
What you get instead of a price list
A number against your actual list, the reasoning behind it if you want it, and the terms attached to it.
That last part is worth more than it sounds. A number with no terms is not an offer. What matters alongside the figure is what happens to the data, who arranges collection and freight, when payment happens and what it is conditional on. Reading a part number is easier against examples than against a rule. These lists name the families that actually circulate in each category, and the prefix or physical marker that identifies each one. They are identification help for writing a list rather than stock lists.

How much is my used server worth?
It depends almost entirely on what is inside it, not on the model on the front, which is why no honest answer to this question starts with a number.

Is old equipment worth anything at all?
Often yes, and the assumption that it is not is why a lot of it ends up in a skip.
Age on its own is a poor predictor. What decides value is whether anything still runs the equipment. Hardware that is widely deployed, still supported and needed for spares holds real value years after it stopped being current, because the fleets running it need replacements and those replacements are no longer made. Equipment nobody deploys any more is worth less regardless of its condition.
Completeness matters more at the older end, not less. Rails and caddies for a discontinued generation can be genuinely hard to buy, which makes a complete machine considerably more useful than a stripped one.
